A few days ago, Spice Tv put together an exciting music and
fashion runway show they tagged
R U
N W A
Y F I
E S T A
The event was held at the federal palace hotel in Victoria Island
and without throwing too much shade, I see why people don’t do too many events
there, suffice it to say that their idea of hospitality is quite different from
what I have experienced at other venues.
This show was quite reminiscent of the BET show “R I P T H E
R U N W A Y” which has also been adapted
for Nigeria in form of M U S I C
M E E T S R U N W A Y. T he
basic idea is that a designer’s collection is sent down the runway alongside a
singer/musician performing simultaneously …….kinda like the Victoria secret
show which has had singers like S E A L,
R I H A N N A, A D A M L E V I N
E, rappers J A Y Z and K A N Y E and
lots many more thrilling acts over the years.
However, this show was unique for one reason; it was made
for Live Telecast which means that there was no chance for mistakes, do overs, unnecessary
delays or people strolling past the camera’s frame anyhow.
I was one of the first photographers to take a position at
the end of the runway(yes, I am learning to be early!) but that didn’t stop
another photographer from asking me if I could “shift” aside a bit so he could
get my perfect angle. Sigh* I tell you, a
lot of shenanigans go on in the photographers pit; I promptly declined with a
smile (in my head I said “come and carry
me”)
The comedian for the evening
was a guy called B A S H and he got the audience warmed up with a few
jokes, he had them in loud guffaws by the end of his bit and rightfully earned
his round of applause.
Lights were dimmed and the show was underway!
First came Pata Pata crooner T E M I
D O L L F A C E performing
alongside G R E Y. She had a very nice hat on and I like her
pinafore pants. Grey’s pieces did not disappoint, they were colorful, wispy,
elegant and light; excellent for our weather.
love her shoes
Next up was a guy I had always wanted to see live J A Y W O
N!! He performed alongside K E N N E T
H I Z E. The pieces are a step outside the conventional
menswear box so to speak with very earthy fabrics and uncomplicated cuts and
designs.
And then there was beauty queen turned rapper M U N A who performed with M O O
F A. Moofa hit us with a delightful array of monochromatic pieces in black,
white and orange! Very versatile and quite wearable.
Singer/rapper Z A M
I R came up with T Z A R. Zamir
was very well dressed, I particularly liked his all grey outfit well accessorized
with a vintage lapel pin.
Next came S A E O N…..and I completely forgot who the
designer was but I loved every single piece of theirs. The dresses were simple,
understated and chic. The lovely plain
colored shift dresses were embellished with intricate beading in gold and black.
Next up! O R I T S E F E M I!!! I am such a fan of this guy
and I was so thrilled that I got to sit front row to watch him perform. He performed
alongside Kola Qudus. Kola infused some
denim in his traditional pieces which came together quite nicely.
B E Z was up next with
W A N A S A M BO. This was a
great combination as Bez’s cool rythms went well with the whimsical flowy
pieces in the collection. The finale dress was amazing, I had my phone in one
hand recording for instagram and my camera in the other trying to capture the
moment. I think the recording suffered slightly but it was well worth it as no
one else has that moment recorded on instagram from my angle!
The singer T E C N O came out with I F E A N Y I N W
U N E who had the most eye catching pops of red
in his collection. I had seen one of his
pieces on my friend Moses Ebite of Moashy stling and I just could not wait to
see more. I was not disappointed; his collection had a lot of black and white
and that oh-so-necessary pop of red!
S E L E B O B O, a new signee of the triple MG record label
came on stage with K I N A B U T I. Kinabuti is very popular for
their manipulation of the Ankara into very unprecedented cuts and designs. They
mixed in denim and leather (or pleather) with Ankara resulting in a burst of
lovely colors and varied textures! The finale dress was so simple and sweet;
quite a departure from the chaotic genius I thought I knew them for.
The night ended with the swimwear line K A M O K I N I which
was accompanied by Kennis Music act J O E L. I’ll let the pictures do the talking
here, you could tell even the models loved the swimwuits as they strutted with
big big smiles on their faces!
